Concept
Electricity is an essential public utility that has become increasingly commoditized and employed as a vehicle for driving economic and stock market growth. Power sector investments are more and more disconnected from actual needs as well as societal and environmental objectives such as reducing carbon emissions to avert catastrophic climate crisis. How did it get to be this way?
At this workshop, Panelists Sarinee Achavanuntakul, author and independent, and Saree Aongsomwang of Thai Consumers Council will offer insights and commentary in reaction to three presentations:
1) Santi Chokchaichumnankij of Energy Watch on policy corruption of the power sector planning process;
2) Chuenchom S. Greacen, an energy researcher, on structural problems and reforms to ensure just, democratic and ecologically sound transformation in power sector;
3) Dr. Sopitsuda Thongsopit, a specialist in solar energy and energy storage, on how Thailand can move toward clean and green energy policy and good governance by drawing from experiences and lessons learned from California where she currently works.
The session will be moderated by Witoon Permpongsachareon, long-time activist and founder of Mekong Energy and Ecology Network (MEENet).
